Despatch is a quaint town situated between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape. It derives its name from the brick industry that thrived here in the late 1800s. Bricks were dispatched from the original railway siding and many of the older buildings in Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth were built using these bricks. Most of these early bricks can be identified by the word “Despatch” imprinted on the top and bottom of the brick.
Family-run TopUp in the heart of Despatch
Today, Despatch is a peaceful little town that is home to about 30 000 residents; many of whom work in the bigger cities nearby.
Stanley Smith took over the ownership of TopUp Despatch in March 2011. At that stage, it was still an Engen but during September of the same year, it was rebranded as a TopUp. Stanley used to work in the corporate sphere and was the Public Relations Officer for Telkom Eastern Cape before taking the leap of becoming an entrepreneur. He ran numerous successful businesses before venturing into the fuel service industry.
TopUp Despatch is a family-run service station and both Stanley and his wife are involved in the everyday operation of the business. On their team, they also have six petrol attendants and a cashier.
As with any business, great service delivery is crucial in the fuel industry and TopUp Despatch is no exception. Petrol attendants are the face of the business and although their job is not an easy one (they have to endure verbal and sometimes even racial abuse), Stanley and the rest of the team from TopUp Despatch strives to always treat all customers in a respectful, friendly manner. Stanley, who is on-site most of the time, also has an open-door policy for clients meaning that issues are resolved immediately. As a service station, it is also extremely important that you never run out of petrol – a promise that TopUp can make due to their connected supply networks.
The spirit of the TopUp brand calls for customer-directed retailing which is personal, rather than corporate, and unique rather than generic. Stanley says, “Although they make use of a third party to deliver my petrol, the service is excellent. I have personal contact with Pieter and Carlos to clear any hiccups, should something happen.”
This TopUp is located in the centre of town at 25 Main Street. The petrol station is open 24 hours a day with the kiosk open until 20:00 in the evening.
